The World Leaders Summit at COP26 delivered several big announcements. The highs included more than 100 countries pledging to reduce methane emissions, another 100 countries committing to end deforestation, as well as new plans from India to accelerate their shift to renewables and some new finance announcements from Scotland, the U.S. and Canada. The lows: Numerous G20 countries are not yet on a trajectory to reach their net-zero goals. Negotiations continue this week to resolve important rules. Read more

New Action Agenda Points $1 Trillion Towards Solar Investment

WRI partnered with the International Solar Alliance and Bloomberg Philanthropies to unveil a new Solar Investment Action Agenda at the UN Climate Summit. Current solar investment lags far behind global needs. “The time for solar energy is now. Solar makes economic sense for energy access, energy security and climate mitigation,” said WRI President Ani Dasgupta in a press release. The Action Agenda identifies opportunities to rapidly mobilize $1 trillion towards solar by 2030. Read more

WRI China released a new report, Accelerating Climate-resilient Infrastructure Investment in China, exploring how climate-resilient infrastructure investment could help China be more resilient to major climate disasters, while tripling economic returns. Extreme weather events — like typhoons — are intensifying across China, but are often forgotten during climate talks. To better thrive in a warming world, China can implement climate-resilient infrastructure in its post-COVID-19 recovery plan. Read more

Funders Aim to Mobilize $2 Billion in Locally Led Land Restoration in Africa

African ministers challenged funders to invest $2 billion to support land restoration through the AFR100 initiative — Africa’s locally led campaign to restore 100 million hectares of degraded and deforested land — by COP27. A core group of funders answered the call, announcing plans to invest in significant land restoration by 2026. This will help move AFR100 into its next phase where accelerating action on the ground is critical. Read more
