CLCV Member, Did you know that more than 2 million Californians live dangerously close an active oil or gas operation? This is an urgent public health crisis, one that disproportionately impacts residents who live in low-income or Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities. Fortunately, there is relief in sight: Governor Gavin Newsom just instructed the state entity that regulates oil and gas, the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), to establish rules to protect public health from the devastating impacts of oil and gas extraction. Now here’s where you come in, friend: CalGEM needs to hear from environmental voters like you to make sure homes, schools, and other public places are a safe “setback” distance (at least a 3,200 feet) from oil and gas drilling. Will you send an email to these California officials? Tell them: No drilling where we’re living! We’ve got a pre-written email all ready to go; all you have to do is click the button below, then click to submit the email to CalGEM. |

Friend, the science is clear: 3,200 feet is the bare minimum distance needed to protect people from the worst health outcomes of being near constant oil and gas pollution, including asthma, cancer, high-risk pregnancies, and an increased risk in serious cases of COVID-19. We cannot continue to ignore these problems that hurt frontline communities, workers, and the economy. It’s time to meet the urgency of the climate emergency by prioritizing the frontline communities it impacts most. With Governor Newsom’s recent instruction, we have the solution; we just have to show the political will. The oil and gas industry is going to pull out all the stops to fight this public health rule, so we need CalGEM to hear from this movement of climate justice warriors. Join us by sending an email urging CalGEM to commit to commonsense health and safety setbacks for new and existing oil and gas sites. |

Thank you for taking this important action, Melissa Romero Legislative Affairs Manager |
