John,
This month, we honor our country's first people and recognize their resiliency and sovereignty during National Native American Heritage Month.
American Indian and Alaska Native peoples were here for thousands of years before our country was born. Pennsylvania was home to at least seven nations -- including the Lenape, Susquehannock, Shawnee, and Iroquois -- before they were forced out by colonizers.
Today, America is home to over 600 federally recognized Tribes. Each Tribe brings its own unique cultures, histories, languages, and traditions to make up the fabric of our country. It's necessary to pause and recognize the horrific injustices our government inflicted on Native Americans for hundreds of years and well into the 20th century.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are committed to ensuring the federal government honors its trust and treaty obligations with Tribal communities. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the countless contributions of Native peoples past and present and honoring their resilience and strength, not just this month, but every month.
We can't right the wrongs of the past, but we can do the work of rebuilding trust between Tribal communities and the federal government.
Thank you,
Dwight
