John, The Trump administration was defined by repeated abuses of executive power, culminating in the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and numerous illegal attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Trump showed us just how precarious our system of checks and balances has become. We must not let history repeat itself. That’s why we support new congressional legislation to increase the legal checks on executive power: The Protecting Our Democracy Act. Tell Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. The Protecting Our Democracy Act (PODA) includes several key reforms that curb unconstrained executive power while increasing executive branch transparency and accountability, including: - Establishing reasonable limits on emergency powers, prohibits self-pardons, and prevents political interference at the Department of Justice;
- Rooting out corruption by preventing presidents from profiting from public office and soliciting foreign interference in our elections;
- Codifying into law the requirement that all major party presidential and vice-presidential candidates publicly disclose 10 years of tax returns; and
- Bolstering Congress' ability for oversight, expediting the enforcement of congressional subpoenas, and increasing protections for whistleblowers and other essential checks on the presidency.
