Hi Friend, did you hear that the Department of Justice is suing Texas?

Last week, the Department of Justice announced they’re suing Texas because parts of the Republican anti-voter bill, SB1, are violating the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts. We’ve been saying all year long that this legislation was created for the sole purpose of suppressing the votes of Black and Brown Texans. We’re glad the DOJ can see through Republican lies and see this legislation for what it truly is -- voter suppression.

Texas Republicans claim that SB1 makes it easier to vote and harder to cheat. The reality is the exact opposite -- SB1 makes it harder for millions of Texans to vote and easier for Texas Republicans to con their way to staying in power. Just like our Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “Our democracy depends on the right of eligible voters to cast a ballot and to have that ballot counted.” This legislation is a blatant power grab, and violating Texans’ civil rights in order to cling to power is not only wrong -- it’s illegal.


Friend, as long as Texas Republicans are in power, they will keep trying to silence our voices and shut down our rights. The best way we can fight back is by registering new Democrats to vote -- so that more Texans can raise their voice and demand better. That’s why we’re working to register up to 2 million more Texas Democrats -- but we need your help to meet that ambitious goal. One thing’s for sure, Friend -- if Donald Trump was still in power, there’s no way his corrupt Justice Department would be standing up for our rights. President Biden and Democrats are restoring institutions like the DOJ so that they do their job and protect the rights of the American people. Texans deserve nothing less -- and unfortunately, right now, there’s only one political party that’s willing to defend our rights and our democracy.

We need a whole lot more Democratic leadership in Texas. But if we let Republicans keep slashing our right to vote, they will turn our state into a dictatorship. That’s why we haven’t stopped fighting. I hope we can count on you to join us today.
