Dear John, Just a couple of weeks ago, GGJ’s demilitaRISE member-leaders were here on Nakochtank and Piscataway lands (DC) for the week of #peoplevsfossilfuel actions in solidarity with our members at Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) and Indigenous leaders from all over Turtle Island. The demands to Biden and lawmakers were clear: protect the treaties, halt fossil fuel infrastructure projects, declare a climate emergency, and deliver on the promises you made to the movements that fought to get you in office.
It was emotional and powerful to be led by cross-generational Indigenous leaders in chants, prayer, song, and reflection about the costs of climate inaction for them and future generations. Throughout
that week, hundreds were arrested and protesters were met with law enforcement aggression while unjust extractive pipeline projects across the country continued. Still, many of us left feeling inspired by the strength of community, moved by the wisdom of the frontlines, and fueled to keep mobilizing to meet the urgency of this moment.
