One week from today, I will be in front of the Supreme Court of the United States fighting to protect our nation's lakes, rivers, and oceans.

What started as a Maui County local water pollution case could have disastrous repercussions for clean water across the United States.

Next week marks a final chapter in a legal battle that started back in 2012, when four Maui community groups represented by Earthjustice sued Maui County for injecting treated sewage into groundwater that carries the pollution to the ocean, destroying sensitive coral reefs off of Kahekili Beach.

The case made its way to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and last March that court agreed that Maui County is violating the Clean Water Act. Maui County, in alliance with the Trump Administration, is appealing that ruling even though people across Hawaiʻi -- including Earthjustice supporters like you -- have urged the County to withdraw the appeal.

Last month, County Council listened to the will of the people and voted to settle the case, but the Mayor insists on stonewalling this decision and continuing the appeal. So now we're headed to the Supreme Court to defend the Clean Water Act.

Earthjustice has spent decades fighting for clean water protections, and with your support we are not stopping now.

This case could set a dangerous legal precedent. If the Supreme Court reverses the 9th Circuit's decision, it will not only affect beautiful Kahekili Beach. It will grant chemical plants, concentrated animal feeding operations, oil refineries, and other industrial facilities around the country a giant loophole to pollute our nation's waterways with abandon.
