Nonviolence reveals the true power relationship, which is that all governments rest on the consent of the governed and that consent can always be withdrawn. This is the essence behind civilian-based defense (CBD). CBD applies massive and selective noncooperation and defiance to make society unrulable by would-be tyrants and aggressors. On November 7, join Philippe and Rivera to talk about managing conflict nonviolently through civilian-based defense.

Philippe Duhamel is a trainer, creative strategist, and organizer of grassroots campaigns that call upon various methods of civil resistance, including non-cooperation and nonviolent direct action. Over three decades, Philippe has co-designed and waged campaigns tackling the arms race, Canadian complicity with Apartheid, military intervention in Central America, the genocidal attacks on East Timor, military training over Innu territory, uranium extraction in Chipewyan and Dene territory, and human rights violations by the G7 and G8 developed countries. His current work focuses on green energy transition and preventing new dirty energy infrastructures.

Rivera Sun is an author, activist, and member of World BEYOND War's Advisory Board. She has written many novels centering nonviolent struggle and peace, including The Dandelion Insurrection. She is a trainer in strategy for nonviolent movements, an alumna (2016) and presenter at the James Lawson Institute (2019). She served as the programs coordinator and digital strategist for Pace e Bene/Campaign Nonviolence and was a creative advisor to the Nonviolence Now project.
