John,

Sadé smiles while holding a photo of her abuela and a copy of the Hand In Hand posterNovember is national caregivers month and Caring Across Generations is proud to partner with Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network for the launch of Honor Domestic Work— a gift giving and story collection project to honor the domestic workers and caregivers in our lives.

For this project, I’m honoring my abuela, a domestic worker who, for over a decade, worked in private homes, including that of a governor. In 1948, when she was 24 years old, she faced an explosion in her employer’s kitchen that resulted in the gradual loss of her eyesight. As her sight diminished, my mother and her sisters took care of her.

For an entire generation, my family struggled to navigate the fractured system desperately trying to care for my abuela with no support outside of family or access to trained quality care. Although my abuela died before I was born—statistical odds stacked against us— I knew her. Her spirit lives in every story my mother tells me, the lessons we have learned, and the actions of my family. She is the core of who the women in my family are, how we love and how we care.

We all have a story to share and someone to honor for their care and support.

John, we’d love to hear yours. Will you share it with us today? We’ll amplify your story on social media and the Honor Domestic Work website.

And, when you share your story, Hand in Hand will send you this beautiful poster by Bay Area artist Micah Bazant for free! This poster makes a beautiful gift for the domestic worker or caregiver in your life.

An illustrated poster features all sorts of domestic workers around the edges and in the center, text reads I Deeply Appreciate Your Work

Thank you for all that you do to support caregivers, and we look forward to hearing your appreciation story.
