John,

In 2019, Washington passed one of the strongest clean electricity laws in the nation, the Clean Energy Transformation Act (CETA). CETA lays a path to achieve a fossil fuel-free electricity grid by 2045 in a way that works for our climate, economy, workers and communities.

Now, the fossil fuel industry and utilities are pushing back hard, and we need your help to safeguard our state’s commitment to a just transition to a clean energy future.

Since passing this law, state agencies have been creating the rules critical to ensuring implementation and transitioning utilities off electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. One of those rules, led by the Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC), would allow utilities to use fossil fuel-generated electricity in Washington past 2045, with no end date in sight.

This is where you come in. The UTC needs to hear from residents like you that 100% clean electricity is non-negotiable. The impacts of the climate crisis are already hitting Washingtonians hard — disproportionately impacting Tribal nations and Black, Indigenous, and other overburdened communities.

Comments are due this Friday, November 12 at 5pm: take action and make your voice heard today. [[link removed]]

The current language proposed by the UTC would allow utilities to use “retained Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)” and other provisions to offset their use of dirty electricity. So instead of 100% of our electricity coming from renewables like wind and solar, utilities could continue operating fracked gas power plants across the state and region to deliver power to Washington customers. This is not the future we committed to in 2019.

Burning fossil fuels for electricity and heat is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Washington State has provided a blueprint to the nation and the world, showing it’s possible to make a just transition to a 100% clean electricity future.

We only have a few more days to protect this critical law — please write the UTC today. [[link removed]]

Thank you for all you do,

Caitlin Krenn
