If we followed the Chronicle’s endorsements, we would only have two Latinos on Houston City Council.

We appreciate the Houston Chronicle's role in our city.

However, if we followed the Chronicle’s endorsements, we would only have two Latinos on Houston City Council. That is unacceptable for a City Council that has sixteen seats and that represents a city where nearly half of its residents identify as Latino.

If we followed the Chronicle’s endorsements, we would re-elect four candidates (Dave Martin, Greg Travis, Mike Knox, and Michael Kubosh) who opposed the City’s efforts to combat S.B. 4, what is frequently described as the show me your papers law. And finally, if we followed the Chronicle’s endorsements, Latinos would lose representation in House District 148, a district where Latinos make up nearly 70% of the population.

As Houston continues to grow, it becomes even more important to be inclusive of the many communities that make it the most diverse city in our country.

In the future, we urge the Houston Chronicle to incorporate diverse perspectives into the endorsement process and weigh issues impacting vulnerable communities in the same way that a candidate’s incumbency was weighed.

The Houston Chronicle got it wrong this time. Representation is pivotal to generating trust with all Houstonians. Help us elect more candidates ([link removed]) who will continue to work towards better representation of Latinos in the Houston area.
