Friend, today I’m excited that a new story is just beginning. United We Dream’s first-ever zine (Immigrant Made), is out and ready for you to read. 🤩
My name is Lucy Galarza and I’m a songwriter and poet from Connecticut. My poem is one of the many pieces of writing and art featured in UWD’s new zine: Immigrant Made.
All of us featured writers and artists are excited because we believe that it’s important for immigrant youth to see ourselves as complex and unique individuals brimming with talent and creativity. I hope you feel the same sense of pride and delight as I did when I flipped through the pages of the zine for the first time. Head over to our website to browse through, download the PDF version to keep or print, and SHARE with your friends and family!
READ THE ZINE
In case you need a refresher: a zine (pronounced zeen like in ‘magazine’) is a self-published body of writing and art that is deeply rooted in community-building, affirmation and protest. Immigrant Made was conceptualized, produced, written and illustrated entirely by immigrant youth artists and writers like me.
“The hardest thing I’ve had to do is choose myself.”
My poems were inspired by feelings many can relate to — the desire to love and feel loved, and how the pandemic has affected our personal relationships in unexpected ways. My poem ends on a reminder that we are all more resilient than we think.
I hope you’ll take a moment to browse our zine. Through our art and writing, we want to remind our communities that our stories matter and that our culture is power!
With love,
Lucy and the rest of the UWD Team
