Michelle Wu and Aftab Pureval made history last week!!!

Winning decisively, both Wu and Pureval will become the first Asian American mayors of their respective cities, Boston and Cincinnati. Wu is the first non-white, non-male person to helm the East Coast city, while Pureval is the first mayor of Asian descent in a major Midwestern city.

AAAFund’s story with both candidates started early…

In 2017, AAAFund kicked off a Cincinnati-based chapter. Their first endorsement was Aftab, who was running for Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.

Back then, Aftab was little-known and facing a steep uphill battle against a long-time incumbent. AAAFund-Tri-State raised money, recruited volunteers, and phone-banked tirelessly for his campaign. He pulled off a stunning upset and we’re proud to have supported the “brown dude with a funny name” ever since.

We’ve also been big supporters of Michelle Wu since she first ran for City Council. We’re so proud and honored to have watched her run authentic, community-building campaigns that redefined for whom Boston stands.

Candidates like Michelle and Aftab are the future of this country.

Wu and Pureval scored big wins along with several other groundbreaking candidates of color running for local office. Pittsburgh and Kansas City both elected their first Black mayors and Dearborn elected their first Arab and Muslim mayor. The first Black Manhattan DA was elected and so was Seattle’s first AAPI mayor. Barriers to diverse political representation across the country are falling, even as Congress struggles to pass inclusive policies.

Partner Spotlight: Emily’s List

Speaking of running and winning, our friends at Emily’s List is hosting their last Run to Win training on December 4!

Since January 2021, they have trained over 2,700 women through online Run to Win webinars, regional bootcamps, fellowship program, and partner webinars. This includes webinars on preparing for early voting and Get Out the Vote (GOTV) to prepare women for their canvassing and calls in the coming months, and a Managing the Press webinar on how to create a messaging strategy, build relationships with the media, and the art of pivoting.

The campaigns team is hosting two virtual resume drops in November for campaign job seekers. The first will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 4-6 p.m. EST, and the second will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 4-6 p.m. EST.

This is a great opportunity for anyone you might know looking for their next campaign position or looking to break into campaign fundraising, field, communications, research, management, etc.
