John,
Last week was the anniversary of Trump’s election defeat and the beginning of the Big Lie. But today I’m thinking of a different anniversary — the five-year anniversary of how our national nightmare began.
November 8, 2016 — it’s a day I think about often. I was general counsel to the Hillary for America campaign and I began the day in Brooklyn, where the campaign was headquartered. By midnight it was clear that despite a sizable popular vote victory, Secretary Clinton had narrowly lost the Electoral College to Donald Trump.
Secretary Clinton called Trump that evening to concede, understanding the importance of a peaceful transition of power. The next day, she also offered some direction to us all: “This loss hurts, but please never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it. It is worth it. And so, we need you to keep up these fights now and for the rest of your lives.”
For months afterwards, the Secretary’s words from that day haunted me. In my latest piece, “Five Years Later,” I reflect on how I still grapple with Secretary Clinton’s charge. She didn’t tell us to fight until Donald Trump was out of office and then stop — and that is what I will do every single day.
Let’s keep up the fight,
Marc
