Dear Reader,

I joined PublicSource in May, just as the city began a historic transition itself. Two weeks after I moved back to my hometown to cover its government, Mayor Bill Peduto lost his bid for reelection in the Democratic primary — the first time a sitting Pittsburgh mayor lost an election since the 1930s.

In January, a new mayor will take office for the first time since 2014.

The new mayor will spend the next several months hiring for powerful city jobs, establishing a relationship with Pittsburgh City Council members and beginning to tackle key issues debated on the campaign trail: gun violence, policing, housing, distribution of federal COVID funds and so much more.

With so much changing in the city, it’s more important than ever that reporters serve the public by keeping a close watch on our elected and unelected officials.
