Positive mental health

There was a recent research study into strategies for improving mental health, compiled by the Mental Health Foundation, which I wanted to share with you. The methodology was for 23 mental health professionals to compile a long list of such strategies and then for almost 1500 service users to vote on which ones they thought were the most effective in their experience. The resultant research paper highlighted those strategies which got the most votes.

I felt this was a good way for mental health professionals and the people they are trying to help collaborating to find solutions that will benefit all. As peers, we know that we are usually the best judge of what works, and that whilst we are likely to share some commonality in our lives, everyone is different. Remember, service users teach psychiatrists too.

Children and young people’s mental health is an area of considerable societal need and has been the focus of a number of recent research council and charity funding initiatives. It is also one of the UCL Mental Health Research Strategy priority areas. UCL has substantial research strengths, across multiple domains, that can and should be at the forefront of leading innovative, cross-disciplinary work in this area.

The UCL Catalyst seminar series is intended to spark fresh thinking and debate, featuring cutting-edge UCL research relevant for children and young people’s mental health and facilitating new connections between scientists working in different disciplines.

The Co-produced Support Project

Inclusion Barnet are looking for adult residents of Barnet, and their carers, who are currently using any of the council’s social care services. We want them to play a key part in shaping adult social care in the borough.

We hope to achieve with The Co-Produced Support Project:

User led research that learns about people’s experience and the ways to improve that experience.Show that involving users in local decision making is effective, good for users and should be on-going.Produce a toolkit that will help Barnet Council and other organisations to include users when they make decisions about the services they provide.

How to look after your mental health on social media

Social media is one of the most fascinating inventions of all time. We have so much knowledge at our fingertips and the opportunity to communicate with people on the other side of the world. However, there's a dark side, and the online world can damage our mental health if we don't look after it.

Help shape new neighbourhood mental health services at the first Community Mental Health Care Summit.

Join this online event for service users, carers and residents to learn how they're recruiting hundreds of new frontline staff and expanding mental health services to make it easier for you and your loved ones to get the right care and support when you need it.

‘The pandemic has reinforced the importance of looking after our mental health,” said Deputy CEO Darren Summers, who leads North Central London’s programme to transform community mental health care.

‘Over the next three years, we’re investing millions of pounds and recruiting hundreds of new frontline workers to boost our local community mental health services including those offered by the NHS and voluntary sector. We want to make it easy for everyone to get help early so they can recover sooner, stay well and improve their quality of life.

‘As we emerge from the pandemic, we’re asking service users, carers and residents to join this online summit to help us shape this new vision for NHS mental health care across north London. This vision will guide our roll out of new neighbourhood mental health services in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington.”
