October has been an extremely busy month, so I'm not sure how I can do it justice in 90 Seconds!
I have just arrived back on the Gold Coast after a whirlwind trip to the US, where I promoted Australian businesses [[link removed]] at the world's largest Space Conference, the International Astronautical Congress in Washington [[link removed]]. This was the perfect setting for the Australian Space Agency to sign agreements [[link removed]] with the German Aerospace Centre, Italian Space Agency, New Zealand Space Agency and Maxar Technologies.
I also engaged in talks with the White House [[link removed]] and NASA [[link removed]] to discuss opportunities for our two nations to collaborate on the upcoming Moon to Mars mission [[link removed]]. It’s all about helping create more local jobs and opportunities in this exciting and growing sector.
While in the US I also toured the TerraCycle offices in New Jersey [[link removed]] and learnt about their innovative recycling solutions. TerraCycle is now partnering with Woolworths to grow the waste recycling industry in Australia [[link removed]].
Before leaving for the States I was delighted to celebrate some outstanding Aussies at the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science [[link removed]]. We had a record number of female recipients (5 out of 10), including the top prize! Plus, STEM specialist teacher Megan Hayes from Mudgeeraba Creek State School [[link removed]] received a highly commended.
And earlier today I was joined by the head of the CSIRO Larry Marshall as we participated in the STEM in Schools initiative at Tallebudgera State School [[link removed][0]=68.ARDu47vdLjZqinwiulKxeve4HY4l7icsGlHgSjQlDaKvCjVndSWA7d1LcruXfi3m3XWrGzjVJCyWXVcHRg-VUDMUfuVn5fYxpkLAWPYUC-bY1BboPTAnOBzdEhuSkTmNoS5UlHh__1-ZbZBa58GsG0pOV1V-tsQeX73RTGe1RlFQZj-YJNTEpIU_ES0tNiCxR3AqNRpGjoUkisRhiWIBLVJQE6hmI7pM_R9KOJpBTY7fd6yL8ov1rUlVMXlJm_VK74lmq-WPy8RFWYWZhmwZrvATnsqLW33wnsK8-TjWb7IQxwvxae0PX2EBsAn1sBFSKjYxxvFiG7k3LBqvoI5c2knOBA&__tn__=-R]. Similar events were being held throughout the nation to help engage our next generation of scientists and researchers.
The talent on the Gold Coast is always inspiring and I was excited to launch the first ever National Missing Persons Hackathon at Coomera TAFE [[link removed][0]=68.ARAsg7mO1fWHI33Wm6QApbP-R7g6I-5dLRW47439RrD2EKftCc27z-51qGKjHS0pLG9WVQLOMNDvYXJeVqR_xT0aOb8kXDfAE2JcRytnZmfGoVLO0JMv3dnGPX3TG-QMiMOWm6ePP3eFV2XmlVvVcGABQrJ0cef6pFNbX4T_bRfkzPwU20CK8sfMLISmsO-HuYm7J9597SYWuJTeJtfGeczxtM_oIuptYPj0QcTDNBo2I79tmM_81M5KiFMcZHEqGx3TMwoPiqn7a8RDKbJDU0iGPtmwx-DmpaVKUkqc-0FYxxqkl04zLDBhtOFhF47vnk7LtY723VkF4tDK2eRZ25OOPx6L73cpd4XSPUdUw3KPOS1iy3qaQVs8Iah6M7Eh_njMFetJcc_gyCEyBTnTTCIMLQa8bB-5UtTc2lRbFXD6KYMczIVqa47iamjL_HlfH7uf19RQVvlM24xJc41dasRwOFechHiYIWL-VdI9j7Zre0hkXcExT_i3sCWtKms6BSEW&__tn__=-R], where ethical hackers used their cyber skills to try and crack 12 cases.
It was also great to discuss local issues while attending a breakfast with the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads. Plus, I enjoyed catching up with old friends and making new connections at the Southern Business Women Connect Lunch [[link removed][0]=68.ARAcnqpUOrtxNFYS71pJvT8n_xWw4rjmrNUrNRU4KS9HKI_TydQdfn_tlpG-0PE_PLbScx6nxABQ350mv_-wqdQ5lNiQQyhO8q5eE3MIbLs0OKV0XB56IAIaZmIpp5_U1fxAc87pIbR9f9OCek9y6H5y8LoaCLmaW84eUzLKUshjKxni6HXx6WV_u8_QdXdUM_QdpYHUXCbFwNKfwZ0N2zb9JuOtHg-6WBh6f1hLKpXLmGQw7g2fJvshKdEVvriOSHAa1bj6vQa6Oc5aoRvWEFgFiG_8o9Bo3hDtNRya9ncXvsXWh4UwBgNYrhqd5ksXdQR0c6aRd39Lhg-pnwgzzJ-4BA&__tn__=-R].
It’s a privilege to be able to back local organisations supporting our community. I recently had the honour of presenting the Currumbin-Palm Beach RSL Sub-Branch with two cheques [[link removed]] through separate Federal Government programs: $42,689.27 for The Ron Workman OAM Veterans’ Support Centre, helping veterans and their families; and $10,695.49 to help renovate their Spirit Den.
While it's been a busy month, I’ll finish with my regular listening post at the Pines Shopping Centre tomorrow – because I know how important it is to remain in touch with our local community.
Finally, a personal highlight was having the honour of introducing our Prime Minister Scott Morrison [[link removed][0]=68.ARD5M7CCNf7cmG00-B9SHUJstMNz7aYOT9SrgcI1WkmINYTdYRhkbmYzkb6WCuz7nqdOcmmrlzky747oqTWzTzcD0i3n1Asq0b-0DjhdXSRd5ryFfJOeWkVxTovtEeamgeKIQLitSCKZRQ4-oV0CprZ9NriHRNK2VCn3GmHmjiQcRYVq-okzRsQSOnh_zXmeChsSqjMlk_DLEc_AkrhmNIRET9DFTjmSTnmnscf-jmcxEzLycRFRCvlWe9lgVTxQ0sXDoerns187skDMIzwCBeguxN7s9epxkhApa8Y0SinlGU-UCw7SN-_gMfV1NWyt3Jqe0HJvCalA3evPZ1h2MiTvyA&__tn__=-R]at the Liberal Party Federal Council, where we celebrated the party's 75th year. You can read my speech here [[link removed]].
Until next month,
