President Biden has finally released his domestic spending plan, and he spoke about it this week at the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland. His plan might sound nice, but it fails to include the strong measures we know are needed to avoid uncontrollable climate chaos.
Instead of a strong bill that takes real steps to fight runaway climate change, we’re seeing more of the same — weak half-measures, taxpayer giveaways to corporate polluters, and continued groveling to the oil and gas industry. President Biden said, “Every day we delay, the cost of inaction increases.” Well, Mr. President, no more delays.
President Biden can and must use his executive authority — right now — to ban fracking on federal lands, reject industry handouts, and put the full force of his administration behind a transition off fossil fuels and onto renewable energy. Further, Biden must protect and invest in the Black, brown, Indigenous and working-class communities that have borne the brunt of fossil fuel pollution and climate disaster.
Fossil fuel executives have poisoned our planet for long enough. Yet the handouts to the fossil fuel industry in the Build Back Better framework are a retreat from the real actions we need to address the climate crisis. President Biden must draw the line with Big Oil & Gas and tell it its time is up.
The latest United Nations Emissions Gap Report shows that plans to tackle climate change aren’t going far enough or fast enough to avert a dangerous rise in global temperatures. It’s clear that there’s no time to delay. Instead of giving money to polluters, we need to end new fossil fuel infrastructure, rapidly phase out fossil fuels and transition to real clean, renewable energy.
