John —

A year ago, all of us were sitting at home awaiting the results of the presidential election. We were worried, scared, and anxious...to say the least.

I was at the American Legion Post in Hollywood taking in the results with friends and supporters on a big screen in the parking lot. Our eyes weren’t always glued to the TV, like many, I was watching Twitter and my texts hoping, praying, for good news.

And when we finally heard that Joe Biden won the election and that Trump would finally be leaving the White House, there were spontaneous celebrations in the streets.

It was a moment full of promise, but also full of determination to do the hard work. That hard work began immediately and hasn’t stopped.

It hasn’t always been pretty — ok, let’s be honest, making new and consequential laws that bring about change is never pretty — but it has been necessary. More than necessary, it is vital to moving the country forward. There is a constant give and take, and you never get everything you want.

But last night, we finally passed the bipartisan infrastructure package. And when I was walking off the House Floor at 12:30 am, it was through a sea of smiling faces. Progressives, moderates, and those in between. Shaking hands, fist bumping, relieved that we were able to finally get this over the finish line.

As President Joe Biden would “elegantly” put it, it’s a big f-ing deal.

It’s going to mean millions of jobs. It’s going to mean billions in investments in roads, bridges, public transit, and safety. It’s going to mean a nationwide electric vehicle charging network. It’s going to mean billions for rail – which “Amtrak Joe” appreciates.

It’s going to mean clean drinking water and investments in water resilience. It’s going to mean broadband for rural and poverty-stricken communities. It’s going to mean renovations to our airports and ports. It’s going to mean billions in clean energy.

For those not watching every twist and turn of this legislation, you might have forgotten how much will get done with this $1 trillion bill.

But our work remains unfinished. We made a promise to the American people that we would invest in them. In our people. In our “human infrastructure.” We will pass the reconciliation Build Back Better package this month.

It’s going to be the biggest investment in fighting climate change ever — over $500 billion for clean energy jobs, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and so much more.

It’s going to be the biggest investment in families and childcare in decades. Universal pre-K, cutting childcare costs for working families, and helping end child poverty.

It’s going to be the biggest expansion of healthcare since Obamacare. Reducing the cost of premiums, expanding Medicaid, and covering vision for those on Medicare.

It’s going to lower taxes for middle-class and working-class families.

It’s going to lower prescription drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate over price with the big pharmaceutical companies.

And we’re going to pay for it by making billionaires and corporations pay their fair share.

This is a make-or-break moment for President Joe Biden. For our House Majority and the Senate Majority. Failure is not an option.

If we don’t demonstrate that the government can work — for the people, for those we’re trying to help — we will reap what we sow. And once we pass it, we need to sell it to the American people. Because the infrastructure and Build Back Better packages will be the greatest investment in our people in generations. A new, New Deal, if you will.

We can deliver to the American people. We did so last night, and we now need to finish the job. We need to get it done.

Let’s get it done.
