Jack,

I just finished reading Rich Karlgaard's new book, _Late Bloomers: The Power of Patience in a World Obsessed with Early Achievement_, and it is full of wisdom, sound advice—and maybe unintentional political insight. Since Rich and I were introduced by George Gilder some years ago, I have come to know him as a publisher of _Forbes_ and one of that magazine’s most incisive writers and thinkers. He is a well-known force in Silicon Valley. But this book introduced me to a personal side of Rich and what he has learned about success in careers and personal dealings. My colleague at the Chapman Center on Citizen Leadership, State Senator Hans Zeiger, said that when he and his wife, Erin, read the book it changed their outlook on life!

If you sense there is something really wrong about the way society in recent decades has been laying down an expectation of early success (a la Gates, Zuckerberg, Jobs, etc.) and induces parents to push their kids too hard and pushes youth to feel demoralized if their career efforts don’t quickly pay off—you should read this book. AND you should come hear and meet Rich in person when he speaks at the annual lunch of the Center for Citizen Leadership ([link removed]) next Wednesday, November 6 at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Seattle. Copies of his book will be available.

Among other things, I have found that Rich Karlgaard shares Discovery Institute’s understanding of human beings as exceptional in our make-up. He sees that people—who are not programmable machines—mature into their destinies and are not just objects of fate. This is a profoundly conservative perspective with political as well as practical personal consequences. Isn’t this what you expect from Discovery Institute at our best?

I hope you will join us for lunch next Wednesday. Register Today! ([link removed])
