Beginning in 1947, lobbyists for the turkey industry have held a nearly annual photo op, gifting the president with a live turkey in advance of the holiday season. President George H. W. Bush formalized the "pardon." Every president since then has held an official turkey pardon ceremony-as though the turkeys had done something wrong, other than being born into our cruel, modern food system.
"Pardoned" turkeys are often sent to farms, petting zoos, and universities with poultry science programs where they are likely not cared for as individuals with unique personalities, emotions, needs, and preferences. To the best of our knowledge, no bird has ever been sent to a sanctuary.
This year, with the help of a growing list of compassionate people-including Billie Eilish, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Ricky Gervais, Natasha Lyonne, Margaret Cho, Dave
Bautista, Mena Suvari, Alan Cumming, Maggie Baird, and Mayim Bialik-we're asking that compassion go a step further.
Join us in requesting that President Biden truly honor birds receiving the so-called "presidential turkey pardon" and release them to Farm Sanctuary.

Every year for the holidays, 68 million turkeys are treated as commodities and endure systematic abuse. This petition asks President Biden to acknowledge that these pardoned birds deserve kindness, personalized care, independence, and the comfort of a flock.
