Here’s what you need to know about redistricting news this week…
Map manipulators in North Carolina voted to pass gerrymandered congressional and legislative maps: In a state where voters are evenly split amongst parties, the congressional map carved out 10 safe Republican seats out of the total 14 districts.
Legislators in Georgia kicked off their special session on redistricting this week: Republicans calling the shots continue to silence voters in the process -- they announced only one in-person hearing in Atlanta and gave people less than 24-hours notice.
After missing multiple constitutional deadlines that were passed by Ohio voters, Ohio Republicans introduced egregiously gerrymandered congressional maps: While voters have slightly favored the Republican party over the past decade -- with 54% of the vote -- the proposed maps would all but guarantee that Republicans win safe non-competitive elections in 87% of congressional districts.

North Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio will all be consequential in determining which party has the majority after the 2022 midterm elections -- which explains why map manipulation is the go-to Republican tactic in these states.
But here’s what we need to remember: there is a democracy reform bill in Congress right now that would completely change the game -- by reducing voter suppression, restoring power to the people, preventing future corruption, and finally making partisan gerrymandering illegal for congressional maps!
If we pass the Freedom to Vote Act, any map used in the 2022 midterm election would need to pass a partisan gerrymandering test. Both the Texas and North Carolina congressional maps would fail that test.
Texans and North Carolinians could have another shot at fair maps -- this is why Republicans are obstructing this legislation in Congress!
All On The Line is helping voters advocate for fair maps and democracy reforms. But we’re up against Republicans who are committed to locking in gerrymandered districts for another decade.
It’s been another tough week -- but as I said, the fight is not over, even in states like Texas and North Carolina. But we need to shift our state and federal advocacy into high gear.
I hope I can count on you to help us by making a donation today.
