Run for Something

Hi John, let's take some deep breaths together. I know that the talking heads on TV are telling their story about the election results right now.

But Run for Something has our own story about the 2021 elections, and I want to make sure you hear it:

No state is guaranteed to be blue forever. But the counter is also true -- no state has to be red forever unless we stop trying to flip it.

At Run for Something, our story is different. We invest in communities no matter how blue or red because we are building power for the long haul. And, John, that WORKS! I don't know if you saw our Twitter feed this week, but it was a bright spot in the general depressive spiral of Politics Twitter™.

Here's our Election Night by the numbers. On Tuesday we had a total of 271 diverse young progressive candidates on the ballot. Of that group, 17 have yet to be called and 125 of them have won! Of those wins:

  • 63% are people of color
  • 59% are women
  • 22% are members of the LBGTQIA+ community

We helped Rebecca Maurer defeat a 16-year incumbent for the Cleveland City Council to become the first out LGBTQ+ woman elected to the council in the city's history.

We elected Peter Argeropoulos to the School Board to represent the families of Manchester, flipping a red seat to blue.

We elected 19-year old Abdul Osmanu to the Hamden Legislative Council in Connecticut, making him the first Muslim and youngest person to ever serve on the council.

We elected the 58th Mayor of Cleveland, Justin Bibb. He's a 34-year-old Millenial ready to lead with urgency and incredible competency this moment requires.

These are only some of what we've accomplished in this so-called "off-year." And that's only just the beginning of the power we're building. That’s why we continue to invest in all communities no matter how blue or red.

Thank you for reading and for participating in this election! NOW no matter how we're feeling, we pull ourselves up, dust each other off, and get ready for 2022.

Thank you,

Amanda Litman
