The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs
Friday, November 5, 2021
Dear John,
The newest Leading To Health article highlights the Medicare Diabetes
Prevention Program.
Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program
In November's Leading To Health column, author Harris Meyer profiles
the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program
and describes trends in enrollment.
The curriculum for the program's first year was developed by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which certifies providers
that meet its standards. Program classes "focus on improving eating
habits, increasing physical activity, handling stress, sleeping better,
and dealing with social pressures to eat and drink," according to Meyer.
However, enrollment in the program has fallen far short of projections.
Only 3,600 Medicare beneficiaries nationally have taken advantage of the
benefit, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported
in July 2021.
To address some of the problems that are limiting participation, CMS has
proposed shortening the program from two years to one year, raising
reimbursement to providers, and waiving a $599 fee that groups offering
the classes must pay to be part of the program.
Today on Health Affairs Blog, Abigail Burman and Simon Haeder explain
how errors in network provider directories
can signal deeper shortcomings in network adequacy regulations.
