Help Us Transition New York City to Electric School Buses Tuesday, November 16
Join us, NYCSBUS, and the New York League of Conservation Voters at 9:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, November 16 for a strategic planning and visioning online workshop to support the transition to electric school buses. The workshop will lay the groundwork to create a roadmap to achieve NYCSBUS’ goal of transitioning to 75 electric school buses in the next two years, along with a vision for electrifying their entire fleet. Gas Free NYC Rally & Hearing Wednesday, November 17
We finally got the New York City Council to agree to have a hearing on Intro 2317, which would prohibit the use of natural gas and other fossil fuels in new buildings and gut renovations. This is a critical step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, as buildings emit the majority of them here in New York City. The City Council hearing begins at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, November 17, and you can watch it online here. But we’re having an online rally beforehand, at 11:00 AM, so RSVP here. Columbia Climate School Panel Turning COP26 Ambition Into Action
In Glasgow for COP26, the United Nations' Climate Change Conference, Peggy Shepard spoke on a panel hosted by Columbia University's Climate School, with students joining from New York via Zoom. In addition to Peggy, the other participants included moderator Jason Bordoff, Dean of Columbia's Climate School; panelist Mary Nichols, Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Columbia's Center on Global Energy Policy and former Chair of the California Air Resources Board; panelist Catherine McKenna, former Canadian Minister of the Environment & Climate Change; Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and former Climate Change Ambassador for France; and special guest speaker Ali Zaidi, Deputy White House National Climate Advisor.
The panelists shared their thoughts on COP26 to date and offered advice to students - both in Glasgow and at Columbia in New York - on how to turn the ambition on display into action on the ground. You can watch the video below.
As part of COP26, Peggy Shepard will participate in the Climate Group's Systems Shift: Embedding Environmental and Social Justice panel at 8:00 AM in Glasgow (3:00 AM EST) on Monday, November 8, discussing how the business and policy sectors can embrace, embed, and support environmental and social justice.
Peggy Shepard will also be on the Meeting the Methane Moment with Equity Through the US Justice40 Initiative panel at COP26 in Glasgow at 11:00 AM (6:00 AM EST) on Monday, November 8. It will be livestreamed at MethaneMoment.org, but we will share clips on social media in case you can't get up that early.
