While our grassroots movement is focused on organizing for 2022, there were also important elections up and down the ballot earlier this week, and I’m proud to report that 53 of our Canary Candidates brought home wins in Ohio. That’s a 58% win rate .

I launched the Canary Candidates Program to elect progressive, pro-worker candidates in Ohio who will lead our party for years to come and set us up for future success. And on Tuesday, we expanded our bench, with wins across the state by young, diverse Dignity of Work leaders.

Sharetta Smith will be the first woman and Black Ohioan to ever serve as mayor of Lima. Justin Bibb will champion a new generation of leadership as mayor of Cleveland. Aftab Pureval will become the first AAPI mayor of a Midwestern city in Cincinnati. Kahlil Seren will take office next year as Cleveland Heights first directly elected mayor.

These victories are a testament to the power and tenacity of our grassroots organization. Many of the candidates who won on Tuesday ran in previous elections and came just short of winning. But they kept working and organizing in their communities, they bravely put their names on the ballot again, and this time, they won. That's how we build for the future -- we lay the groundwork, we work hard, we never give up.

It goes to show: We have so much potential in Ohio. We need to keep fighting, keep organizing.

These victories wouldn’t have been possible without dedicated grassroots supporters like you, so I want to thank you for all you did to get us to this moment and all you continue to do for our movement.

Now, we need to keep this up for 2022, because what we’re doing isn’t about just one Election Day -- it’s about the long-term. Making progress for working families in Ohio and across the country requires year-round activism.

With gratitude,

Sherrod
