Friend —
On this day in 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress.
In the decades since Rep. Chisholm's herstory making moment, we've elected Black women to the House, the U.S. Senate, and now, even the White House with Vice President Kamala Harris.
These breakthroughs in representation didn't come about organically. Black folks have been shedding blood, sweat, and tears for generations to make a place for ourselves in American democracy. And these victories are built on the foundation of one crucial thing: our right to vote.
Our Vote To Live Campaign is about giving Black people a voice. We are organizing 24/7, 365-days-a-year to make sure our voices are heard at the polls, no matter where we live, because our vote is our power.
Rep. Chisholm said, "You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas."
The midterm elections are barely a year away, friend. Which means we need to start raising the heat on our organizing efforts right now. Are you ready to get to work registering and mobilizing Black voters? If you're with us in this democracy-saving work, add your name now.
Onward,
Stefanie
