​​​​​​​In June, India Walton ran an inspiring campaign and beat incumbent Byron Brown in a Democratic primary. She was poised to be the first female mayor in Buffalo’s long history. But on Tuesday, after launching a massive write-in campaign against her that was funded by Republican operatives (including outspoken fans of Donald Trump), Brown took back the seat by a slim margin.

India Walton’s race was historic and groundbreaking. And the work we did helped to push the envelope and give the voters in Buffalo, and many complacent politicians, reason to take her candidacy seriously.

The fight in Buffalo was unlike anything anyone had seen before. We captured the attention of people across the nation – and there are many other exciting candidates like India waiting to jump into the political arena. We wanted to share a bit of India’s statement with you:

One major accomplishment of ours is ending the era of complacent Buffalo politicians. No longer can they feel confident that they can rest easy in their seats of power. No longer can [they] feel that their offices are safe without having to do anything to improve the lives of their constituents. They now know that, unless they step up for our city, their careers are at risk. We taught them that.

Millions of dollars came pouring in to finance attack ads, personal smears, and racist, sexist fear-mongering. Every dirty trick in the book was tried against us, from draining our resources in legal fees, to playing flagrant lies on a loop, to Republican poll inspectors pre-stamping ballots. The hostility and aggression against us was ugly and relentless.

We knew that would be the case. When you take on the corrupt and powerful, you can’t expect them to play fair.

This is what many of our candidates will be up against when things pick up for the 2022 midterm elections. We cannot afford to wait until a couple of months prior to Election Day to start supporting our female candidates. The work to push back against the status quo starts TODAY. We are jumping right back into our work for the next election cycle. There will be exponentially more races across the nation, and so many more phenomenal candidates to support.
