Transforming Civic Education from K-12 through College

Civic education reform ([link removed]) has become a hot topic in the country today. Many agree that big change is needed. While this motivation is encouraging— it's time to go beyond talk and take action.
At the Jack Miller Center, we believe that "the battle for the soul of our country will be won or lost in our classrooms"™. Since 2004, we have been the boots on the ground in this movement, making changes in civic education at all levels. See below for a quick look at our progress on campus and in the classroom:
Progress At a Glance
Here's a quick look at our impact to date, thanks to your support
FALL K-12 EDUCATION REPORT
* So far, more than 1,000 middle and high school teachers in six regions have participated in our summer teacher institutes, professional development seminars, or graduate courses taught by our partner professors.
* Since July 2020, the American Civics and History Initiative (ACHI) ([link removed]) , our collaboration with the Bill of Rights Institute and the Ashbrook Center, has conducted 111 professional development programs for Florida teachers. ACHI plans to reach 6,800 teachers by 2022.

* Our K-12 teacher programs are offered in six regions across the country, including our state-wide initiative in Florida. Building on our great success in Florida, we are in the process of expanding our ACHI statewide initiative to three new states in 2022 — Texas, Wisconsin, and Virginia.
* Our campus partner programs at American University (Washington D.C.), Coastal Carolina University (South Carolina) and Oglethorpe University (Georgia) are joining with JMC to offer K-12 teacher education programs beginning in their areas beginning in Summer 2022.

The JMC's expansion to the K-12 level ([link removed]) began in 2016 to provide graduate courses and professional development opportunities for civics and history teachers.

Every program enables teachers to study the key thinkers and ideas in the American political tradition with experts, and helps them develop useful content for their classrooms.
FALL HIGHER EDUCATION REPORT

Highlights at the university level:

In September, JMC sponsored
Constitution Day events on 45 college and university campuses and provided 5,000 pocket-sized copies of the Constitution and Declaration to undergraduate students.

* Many of our signature programs are designed to help advance the careers of scholars at all levels and promote research in America's founding history and principles. These programs include the 2021 Lincoln Symposium held in October in Portland, Oregon, and the virtual 2021 Jeffersonian Seminar, coming this November.

* We established 11 new partner programs in 2021 to enrich undergraduate education through new courses, events, fellowships, and more. Our newest partner programs are on the following campuses:

Ave Maria University

Baylor University

University of California-Berkeley

Catholic University of America

Coastal Carolina University
