Centre for Mental Health news

November 2021

Hello from Sarah!

Dear friends,

With COP26 underway in Glasgow, we wanted to share with you
our position statement on climate change and its impact on mental health. We are committed to playing our part in fighting for the system change we need to support better mental health and climate resilience.

Like the climate crisis, turning the tide on rising mental ill health requires decisive action, so we were deeply disappointed that funding for early support hubs for young people was not included in the recent
Spending Review. However we have not given up on making this vital resource for young people a reality.

Do take a look at our new research into
the ‘lifeline’ provided by London’s voluntary and community organisations during the pandemic, and the challenges they face. We also launched a new briefing on how integrated care systems can improve mental health in their communities by taking a public health approach.

Our podcast this month is an absolute must-listen, featuring our peer researcher Alex Augustine on the wearing impact of racism on the mental health of Black people, and the importance of genuine co-production and lived experience perspectives in research.

Take care,

Sarah
A lifeline for London
Commissioned by the Mayor of London, this report explores how voluntary and community organisations in London supported people’s mental health during the first year of the pandemic, how they adapted to the crisis, and what they’ve learned from the experience.

It calls on commissioners to offer funding models that support the VCS sector's stability, sustainability and diversity.

London’s voluntary and community organisations have been a lifeline throughout the pandemic - but they're at risk without fair funding.
Better together: A public health model for mentally healthier integrated care systems
To support better mental health, integrated care systems should focus on reducing poverty and inequality whilst improving the environment and providing tailored support for people with the highest risks of mental illness.

This briefing outlines how integrated care systems can adopt a public health model to use their budgets, powers and influence to support better mental health outcomes for all.

Ed Davie explains key ways that integrated care systems can work to prevent mental ill health, such as getting Living Wage accredited, encouraging active travel and providing access to green spaces.
Podcast: Alex Augustine - 'Bringing a unique perspective to peer research'
Alex Augustine, one of the Centre’s peer researchers, discusses what genuine peer involvement and coproduction should look like, and highlights the urgent need for organisations to put lived experience centre-stage.
