| Dear Friend, After Democrats announced impeachment hearings, Donald Trump ran $1.6 million in Facebook ads that were chock full of lies.(1) Due to a major policy change at Facebook, Trump can and will continue to run these misleading ads and spread false information.(2) Facebook has folded to public pressure before, so we need to use the same grassroots influence to get the company to drop its pro-Trump policy. The stakes are just too high to let Facebook give free rein to politicians to spread misinformation. It is considered common knowledge that Facebook's policies assisted Trump in winning the election in 2016. The social media giant allowed Cambridge Analytica to scrape data from millions of profiles that was used to manipulate voters.(3) And when thousands of fake profiles created by foreign bots posted misinformation about Hillary Clinton, Facebook looked the other way.(4) The uproar following the discovery of the Cambridge Analytica scandal was fierce, and Facebook changed its policies on advertisements, requiring stricter verification and vetting. But now, Facebook has given politicians an exemption, allowing Trump to continue spreading his lies to millions of users. And the change came after Zuckerberg had a private meeting with Trump in the White House.(5) In just the last month, Trump has run ads on Facebook that television stations refused to air because of how false they were. One ad claimed Joe Biden promised Ukraine $1 billion to fire their prosecutor general. Another claimed impeachment would invalidate the 2016 election.(6) Zuckerberg didn't just meet with Trump -- he has been having dinner with Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro, notorious peddlers of right-wing hate and conspiracy. Zuckerberg has also said explicitly that a Warren presidency would ruin Facebook and he’d do anything possible to fight it.(7) We can't let Facebook swing another election.
