Hello from Glasgow to Turtle Island! I am reaching out because we would love to have your support co-sponsoring, amplifying, and crossposting from Facebook live for an International Town Hall: End Militarism to Stop climate Change organized by the Feminist Peace Initiative (comprised of GGJ, MADRE, and Women Cross DMZ) on Wednesday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m. PT/ 4:00 p.m. ET/ 9:00 p.m. Glasgow time. 

Anti-militarist and abolitionist movements in the U.S. are convening this virtual town hall with allies in the Global South to share stories of resistance against climate and ecological damage wreaked by U.S. militarism. We are calling on U.S. elected officials to divest from funding unending wars, withdraw military presence around the world, and prioritize investing in an economy that centers and sustains life.

Right now, GGJ’s own frontline grassroots leaders are on the ground in Glasgow, Scotland, at the 2021 Conference of Parties 26 (COP26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). We are demanding and fighting for a Just Transition to a Regenerative Feminist Economy that promotes A Vision for A Feminist Peace and calls to divest from wars at home and abroad, and invest in a regenerative future.

November 6 will be a Global Day for Climate Justice. GGJ will take to the streets in Glasgow, as part of the It Takes Roots frontline delegation, and in unity with social movements across the globe, led by the people most impacted by the climate crisis. We urge our members to join the call for decentralized mass mobilizations across the world.

Why are polluters so eager to pledge net zero?

COP26 is being dubbed the Net Zero COP. You will hear net zero pledges everywhere—from transnational corporations, polluting governments, and even some big conservation NGOs, all parading carbon offset schemes and pledging to reach net zero targets.

Net zero is an illusion—a smoke screen—a last ditch effort to sell a fantasy, buy time, and profiteer off the very disaster they are creating.

The “net” in net zero refers to the math equation that polluters use to pretend that they can offset and balance the harm of the pollution they are emitting into the atmosphere. These powerful players use "net zero" to disguise climate inaction and continue to pollute fenceline Black, Brown and Indigenous communities, while colonizing the forests of the Global South. In this way, Net Zero is also green colonialism. 

As the U.S. re-enters the Paris Agreement, our frontline movements demand that the Biden Administration make actual emissions reductions at the source of pollution. No Net Zero—Keep It In the Ground!

Únase al Día Mundial por la Justicia Climática el 6 de noviembre

El 6 de noviembre será el Día Mundial por la Justicia Climática. GGJ saldrá a la calle en Glasgow, como parte de la delegación de las primeras líneas de It Takes Roots, y en unidad con los movimientos sociales de todo el mundo dirigidos por las personas más afectadas por la crisis climática. Instamos a nuestres miembros a que se unan a la convocatoria de movilizaciones masivas descentralizadas en todo el mundo.

¿Por qué los contaminadores están tan dispuestos a prometer el “cero neto”?

La COP26 ha sido bautizada como la COP de las cero emisiones netas de carbono. Se oirán promesas de esto por todas partes: empresas transnacionales, gobiernos contaminantes e incluso algunas grandes ONG conservacionistas, quienes desfilarán con planes de compensación de carbono y promesas de llegar a cero emisiones netas de carbono (“cero neto”).

Las promesas de “cero neto” son una ilusión, una cortina de humo, un último esfuerzo para vender una fantasía, ganar tiempo y sacar provecho del mismo desastre que están creando.

“Neto” se refiere a la ecuación matemática que los contaminadores utilizan para pretender que pueden compensar y equilibrar el daño de la contaminación que están emitiendo a la atmósfera. Estos poderosos actores utilizan el “cero neto” para disfrazar la inacción climática y seguir contaminando a las comunidades negras, de color e indígenas que se encuentran en las primeras líneas, al tiempo que siguen colonizando los bosques del Sur Global. De este modo, la idea del “cero neto” es también parte del colonialismo verde. 

Con la reincorporación de Estados Unidos al Acuerdo de París, nuestros movimientos en las primeras líneas exigen que el gobierno de Biden realice reducciones reales de emisiones en las fuentes de contaminación. No al “cero neto” - ¡Manténgalo en la tierra!
