Progressives say they want a more reflective democracy. What does that mean in practical terms? It means supporting regular working people from all walks of life—people who’ve lived the struggles for which legislation is meant to ease the burden.

We always say our candidates at Brand New Congress are “regular working people.” This means they have jobs and families. They aren’t millionaires. They aren’t career politicians who were hand-picked and backed by the establishment.

For instance, after Anthony Clark’s (IL-07) injury this last summer, no DCCC dollars came in to save his campaign. He’s had to muscle through, against all odds, with no support from the Democratic Party. He continued to work as a high school teacher while mounting a campaign against entrenched incumbent Danny Davis. Through pure grit and determination, Anthony’s campaign gets out there every day and meets voters.

Most BNC candidates work full-time jobs while campaigning. Those are exactly the kind of representatives we need in Congress . They know what it’s like to struggle to put food on the table, to go without healthcare and childcare. Some have lost their jobs. Others have been blacklisted from work just for running for office.

These brave candidates have sacrificed a lot to put themselves out there and run to represent the people of their districts or their states. It’s small-dollar donors, an army of volunteers and organizations like Brand New Congress, that mount the support these grassroots candidates need to win.
