Getting debt justice at COP26

Hi friend,

COP26 is in full swing, with only the future of the planet at stake. Delegates, campaigners and activists have all descended on Glasgow’s (so far surprisingly) sunny shores. But the sun is not shining for debt justice.

Lower income countries are demanding to talk about debt at COP but are being shut down. Speaking from the summit, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio raised debt as a key barrier to fighting the climate emergency saying that without concrete action:

“good climate policies and ambitions alone, such as ours in Sierra Leone, may fall short.”

With 48 countries spending five times more on debt repayments than mitigating the devastating effects of climate change – it is essential for world leaders to act.

We made headlines yesterday ([link removed]) trying to get the message across with our enormous Loch Ness Debt Monster, but our campaign calls were shut down. Let’s make sure the voices of those in the global South are heard loud and clear.
