This week Pfizer announced profits so far this year of $7.7 billion, 133% more than it made last year. 

And Moderna has made $7.3 billion in profit, after receiving over $10 billion of public funding for development and manufacture of its vaccine. 

Record Profits

On the back of the current global emergency Pfizer and Moderna are busy selling their vaccines to rich countries, and extracting record profits. Far from being our saviours, pharmaceutical companies are doing what they do best – extracting profit from publicly funded R&D.

And while their shareholders and CEOs are making a killing, less than 2% of all Pfizer jabs have been sold to the WHO sharing mechanism Covax. With booster jab orders continuing to roll in from rich countries, these companies care little for solving vaccine apartheid. 

More people in the UK have had their booster doses than people in Africa have been vaccinated with the initial one. Rich nations have already bought most of the existing doses and pre-paid future orders too for their booster campaigns. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies are planning ahead for raising their prices – and profits – even further.  

This is a moral outrage that shows governments and pharmaceutical companies have learnt little from past public health crises. Big pharma will not release their vaccine know-how voluntarily. We need governments to step in and make them. Greed cannot and will not solve this for us.
