John,
Yesterday, we once again witnessed the deliberate blocking of the passage of critical voting rights legislation as a strategy to limit the voices of all Americans. The senators who voted against the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are threatening our democracy and the ability of our country to conduct free and fair elections.
You’ve heard it before: The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore and strengthen our freedom to vote by making sure that any changes to voting rules that discriminate against voters based on our race or background are federally reviewed, so we all have an equal say in our future and our rights are protected. I’ll be honest with you -- it’s been hard to understand why this legislation hasn’t been passed. Laws that protect and ensure the right to vote for all Americans are some of the most essential to our country’s values -- they shouldn’t be controversial, and the reality is: They’re not.
Join me in calling or emailing your senators right now to tell them we must reform the filibuster and pass this vital legislation before it’s too late: A majority of Americans AND a majority of senators support this legislation, but the filibuster and a small group of elected officials are standing in the way of what the American people want. It’s important to note that voting rights legislation was overwhelmingly supported in the Senate not too long ago under President George W. Bush. In 2006, the Voting Rights Act was extended by a vote of 98-0 with 52 Republican senators voting for it. Today, it’s hard to see a path forward for voting rights without meaningfully reforming or eliminating the filibuster. We need the Senate to act now in order to protect voting rights for generations to come.
The most important thing you can do today to help us in this fight for voting rights is contacting your senators and talking to them about the importance of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and instituting meaningful filibuster reform. I know we’ve asked you to do this a couple of times, but we have to keep pushing in order to make progress. We can’t do this work without your support. Thank YOU for being an essential part of our team and for continuing to work with us to make progress.
