We made history in Bexar County and John Lujan will return to the State House after a historic win to retake the HD 118 seat. Republican John Lujan was reelected Tuesday to serve Texas House of Representatives District 118, comprising much of southern and eastern Bexar County. He was first elected in 2016 in a special election after the incumbent Democrat quit. He lost the race last year, only to see that Democrat resign this summer, forcing an awkwardly timed special election. Voters in District 118 are normally able to cast ballots at any Bexar County polling place, but state law required that only 24 polling places within that District offer the runoff ballot. We’re very pleased that our county will have another Republican representing us in the Texas House. We also believe John Lujan is well positioned to win re-election next year. Democrats all over Texas should be worried that this is only a preview of next year’s results. We had the better candidate in this race, and he won. We can now see what we all know: identity politics is dead and we will always stand against such a dehumanizing means of dividing people. Lujan and his Republican opponent Adam Salyer together took a majority of the votes in the first round of the special election held in September. Democrats should not have been shocked to see Lujan, who won over 40% of the vote in September, pick up those Republican votes and win the runoff. However, despite the Democrat candidate Ramirez’ complaint that his voters would be confused by having to cast two ballots, he received four times as many votes in the runoff as he did in September. In the end, even the large turnout for Ramirez was not enough to beat the Republican. The race drew national media coverage. Democrats rightly fear that this race is a bellwether for next year’s elections, and bodes ill for Democrat candidates all over Texas and the rest of the nation. We are proud of John Lujan, the @LujanforTexas team, the efforts of the @BexarGOP team and we are happy for the residents of HD 118 to have a servant-hearted leader ready to take office on day one. Now, let's work in unison, as a team to turn Bexar County red. Sincerely, John Austin Chairman, Republican Party of Bexar County BexarGOP press release sent to local and area media regarding the HD 118 historic win. [email protected] Republican Party of Bexar County Chairman Releases Statement on Texas House District 118 win “It was a big night for HD 118 and the voters made an excellent choice in sending John Lujan to Austin to represent HD 118.” (San Antonio, Texas) John Lujan, Republican, won the race for House District 118 in a run-off election on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Lujan beat Frank Ramirez, Democrat, in the runoff election after Ramirez had a narrow lead in the counting of the early votes. Lujan pulled ahead and maintained the lead to victory. “It is a good day in Bexar County because John Lujan won the HD 118 seat,” stated John Austin, Chairman of the Republican Party of Bexar County. “Our Party met with John’s team right after the expedited special election held in September to strategize our Get Out the Vote campaign for the runoff, and we know that John will be an excellent Representative and serve his community very well.” The race drew national media coverage and could serve as a bellwether for next year’s elections. Representative-Elect John Lujan, a successful entrepreneur and retired first responder, had previously been elected in a special runoff election in 2016 but lost in the general election. In less than a year, Lujan succeeded in improving the district by removing a mountain of old tires that was a blight in the area. The dump was a health and safety problem that he solved for the residents. We expect Lujan to be a positive force for the district with a servant-hearted approach to his constituents and the residents of HD 118. He is a proven leader and ready to step into the role on day one. HD118 stretches from South San Antonio to Somerset and curves to the east of Bexar County and as of 2019 there are approximately 182,000 residents and 70% are of Hispanic Heritage and has been primarily Democrat for the past two decades.
