Economic models are not ends in themselves, but instruments for
achieving what we're really after—a society in which people are able
to treat one another as ends, not as means.
-- Vivek Chibber
Comrades,
This week, DSA candidates won historic elections across a wide
variety of cities and communities, and we're proud to be in a movement
with these fierce and serious socialist fighters. Metro DC DSA has a
cute and concise page with the various results
(https://washingtonsocialist.mdcdsa.org/station-z/dsa-races-2021) ,
which show in one sense how far the socialist movement has come,
reveal the changing battle lines in American politics, and reinforce
the universal importance of campaigns that address people's material
needs. The national DSA Twitter account
(https://twitter.com/DemSocialists) also has some recaps and
reflections on the struggles and successes of these campaigns:
"We win elections when we legislate change that people can feel
(https://twitter.com/CoriBush/status/1456001654780833796) ." And yet,
"The goal [is] never to win for the sake of winning. The goal... is to
make a city that works for all of us, and to build that movement with
our neighbors
(https://twitter.com/BeccaForWard7/status/1455924131501944841) ."
These are two sides of the same coin, both rejections of the idea
that progressive politicians should govern with only their next
campaign in mind, and then campaign just to fundraise. As socialists,
we see that there's no campaigning or governing at all without
movement-building. If you take it seriously, it's all one task, but
it's a big one: "Every day we're building the socialist movement our
class deserves
In solidarity!

** DEMANDING HAZARD PAY, TRANSIT WORKERS FORCE AC TRANSIT TO
THE NEGOTIATING
TABLE
------------------------------------------------------------
All
across California, frontline workers have demanded and won hazard pay
during the pandemic, especially in grocery, retail and healthcare
workplaces. Transit workers in the Bay Area, though, have not received
one penny of extra compensation for continuing to work in
life-threatening conditions. On July 28, over 40 AC Transit workers
and riders spoke up at the AC Transit board meeting to demand transit
workers be paid retroactive hazard pay.

Capitalists just “greedy”? How do they relate to each other, and to
us? And most importantly, what can we do to fight against them?

We had a blast seeing you all at the end of the summer social,

emails for months or years but never come to a DSA event. Maybe you
used to be active in the chapter before the pandemic, and you’re ready
to start organizing again. Maybe you’ve just moved to the Bay Area and
you’re ready to get involved.
Wherever you’re coming from, we want to hang out with you!
🌹 Hear what we’re currently working on
💪 Get more involved in
critical fights right here in the East Bay
🌰 Eat some autumnal
snacks
Right now, we’re facing climate catastrophe as well as a Democratic
establishment eager to yank housing and unemployment checks away from
regular people in the middle of a pandemic. But at the same time, tens
of thousands of workers from Kellogg to Kaiser to John Deere are
striking for better material conditions as the labor movement grows in
strength.
There’s never been a more pressing time to make the jump from
socialist to *organized* socialist. And that starts with meeting your
comrades and taking action. Plus, it’ll be fun, we promise. Join us!
Invite all your union friends and the socialism-curious!
Look for us at Snow Park (the corner of Harrison St and 19th Street
next to Lake Merritt).

From Fremont to Vallejo and Oakland to Antioch, East Bay DSA covers

been done in other DSA chapters including DSA LA, DSA Atlanta, and
Metro DC DSA.
Branches can be formed in many ways and we want your input on how

SIGN UP TO TALK TO A MOBILIZER!
Are you a new DSA member? Or
are you looking to get more involved with East Bay DSA's projects and
campaigns? Sign up to talk to a mobilizer!
Here are three reasons to sign up to talk to a mobilizer:
1.
Meet a fellow socialist organizer
We want to build a movement of
millions of working class people and change the exploitative and
oppressive system in which we live, but we do that first and foremost
by building one-to-one connections with each other.
2. Answer your questions
Learn more about DSA, the local East
Bay chapter, and our different committees and projects.
3. Get more involved
The main thing a mobilizer will help you
with is getting more involved in DSA. Maybe there’s a campaign or
project you’re particularly interested in, or maybe you’re a blank
slate and you don’t really know what to do. Either way, a mobilizer
will help you figure it out.

EAST BAY DSA MEMBER SURVEY ON BRANCHES
Now you’ve seen EBDSA
Branch socials on the calendar and photos in the newsletter. Maybe
you’ve even attended one! But have you taken our Branches Working
Group’s member survey? Please take 5 minutes to fill out this survey
to help us craft our proposal, which will be reviewed by the Steering
Committee and approved by the general membership.
Your input on how and where to form branches, and what work you'd
like to see them take on, will be invaluable in crafting a
proposal.

The big lesson of Oklahoma and West Virginia is that workers,
their families, and their communities were able through these strikes
to win more in a shorter period than any comparable struggle in a hell
of a long time. And the reason they won these gains is that they
focused on the workplace, they withdrew their labor, and they created
a crisis.
