Biden administration makes new effort to end Remain in Mexico

Last week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security published a long overdue memo terminating the inherently inhumane and unlawful Migration Protection Protocols, also known as the “Remain in Mexico” program. Once again, we call on the Biden administration to take every step available to end Remain in Mexico and other border policies, like Title 42, that subject asylum seekers to harm and make Black, Brown, and Indigenous people suffer for seeking lawful protection at the U.S. border. Illinois counties improperly profit off the detention of immigrants

McHenry and Kankakee counties in Illinois have openly admitted to continuously misusing federal funds that are intended to care for individuals detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Meanwhile, people in detention don't have basic hygienic products, adequate and fresh food, or decent medical care. Read our latest blog post.

 

Men in Florida detention center demand investigation into anti-Blackness

Two men detained by ICE at Glades County Jail are demanding an investigation into abuses they experienced including anti-Blackness, physical assault, medical neglect, and extended periods of solitary confinement. NIJC and a coalition of local and national organizations filed a civil rights complaint on their behalf to investigate the facility and demand the immediate release of people detained in immigration detention. Lawful permanent resident, deported after mental health breakdown, seeks to come home

NIJC is representing a permanent resident named Teddy Birhanu in petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court for a review of rules that led to his deportation to Ethiopia after he was arrested while in a mental health crisis. Teddy's experience exposes the U.S. immigration system's discrimination against people with mental illness and our country’s racist policing of Black men. NIJC lawyer Keren Zwick shares his story on our blog.
