Right now, the United States is one of only six countries — and certainly the only wealthy country — in the whole world without any form of national paid leave. Since coming to Congress in 2017, the fight for paid family and medical leave has been an important priority of mine because it means winning some real, life changing relief for people across this country.
That’s why I’ve been organizing alongside other progressives and women in Congress to lead the charge for guaranteed paid family and medical leave for every worker in America as part of the Build Back Better Act. Despite all of the corporate lobbying and opposition from conservatives, we have just won paid family and medical leave in the House’s Build Back Better Act. It’s a huge achievement that will make a real difference for families throughout America.
Whether it’s welcoming a new child into your family or experiencing an unexpected illness, no person in this country should ever have to make a choice between keeping their job and taking care of a loved one. The wealthiest Americans and big corporations must finally pay their fair share in taxes so we can invest in working families. That includes paid family and medical leave.
I know it feels like this fight has gone on for far too long — we have corporate lobbyists and their unchecked influence over our political system to thank for that. But we can’t stop now. Paid family and medical leave policies are incredibly popular, and we have to see them through. I know we can do it — we can join the rest of the world in finally guaranteeing paid leave.
In solidarity,
Pramila
