John,
The election results in Virginia were a deep disappointment. I cannot and will not sugar coat that. And thank goodness we pulled out the win in New Jersey. The party of every President since George H.W. Bush has lost both states’ governors races during their first term and we were fortunate to avoid that result in the Garden State.
It’s clear that we’ve got a tall task ahead. Bucking the historical midterm trend and keeping our Democratic majorities in Congress won’t be easy, but it can be done. And we must get it done.
Part of what makes it so challenging is that we are up against a right-wing media complex that functions as a kind of state-run media for the GOP.
82% of Fox News viewers believe the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump according to a poll out this week. And 97% of One America News Network and Newsmax viewers feel the same way.
That's over two-thirds of all Republicans. That’s crazy. And that’s dangerous.
But we must not lose hope. We do not have the luxury of despair.
We must heed Virginia as a warning. If we don’t step up right now, and get our work done — passing both the Build Back Better bill and infrastructure — we risk losing our Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate. Period. End of story.
Mitch McConnell becomes Senate Majority Leader and Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House. Meaning, we can say goodbye to any and all attempts by Democrats to pass any meaningful help for families, progress, or change.
We can’t let that happen. I refuse to back down. I am committed to doing everything I can to protect our majority and our democracy.
We have a steep battle against a right-wing media spreading disinformation and lies, and we need the resources to be able to break through. It’s not going to be easy.

Tuesday’s loss was a setback but it doesn’t mean our work is over. Rather, it means the fight to win the midterm elections is only beginning. And it is going to be the fight of our lives.
Our democracy remains fragile. But working together, I know that better days are ahead.
Thank you for your support.
