Tuesday’s results should send a clear signal, team -- we can’t take anything for granted .

Governor Phil Murphy won re-election in New Jersey in a surprisingly close race. Meanwhile, culture warrior Glenn Youngkin will be the next Governor of Virginia — a state that President Biden won by 10 points. Terry McAuliffe received 600,000 more votes in this week’s election than he received in his successful race for Virginia Governor in 2013, but Republicans used dog whistle, racial politics to stoke fear and turn out voters. It is also clear that Democrats in Washington must finish the work on the historic infrastructure bills that will improve the lives of working families and demonstrate clearly that we are fighting for them.

Former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis famously said in 1931 that states are “laboratories of democracy.” All too many states with Republican governors have become laboratories of destruction. As we turn to 2022, it’s imperative that we invest in governors races [[link removed]] to protect and expand progress in states across the country -- including right here in Maryland.

This will not be an easy fight, team . Republicans won three of Maryland’s last five gubernatorial elections, and the Washington Post called this race one of the most expensive in state’s history. But here’s the bottom line: Marylanders can no longer afford to have leadership in Annapolis that doesn’t represent our progressive values.

We need leaders who know how to govern and take on tough fights. I’ve spent my entire life in these fights -- from prosecuting police brutality and white supremacists, to holding corporations accountable for racist lending practices and wage theft, to defeating Donald Trump. I’m ready to serve Marylanders as your governor, but I need your grassroots support to get there:
