Hi John, In March 2020, the Trump administration used the COVID-19 pandemic to implement Title 42, a policy to justify closing the U.S. border to all migrants and asylum seekers. Since then, we’ve turned away hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children and families, forcing many to return to food insecurity, political upheaval, devastation from natural disasters and imminent threats of violence in their home countries. Marta* and her three young children fled Honduras in a desperate search for safety. They’d been suffering from brutal domestic violence for months, but the police allowed their abuser to walk free. Fearing for their lives, Marta and her kids made the perilous trek to the U.S. border, where they were immediately expelled to Mexico. Nearly two years later, they’re still living in an overcrowded and under-resourced shelter, waiting for an opportunity to seek safety in the U.S. When families like Marta’s travel to the U.S., they expect to find a safe haven. Instead, they’re being met with indifference. John, I know we’ve written you about this before and we hate to do it again, but the Biden administration is still putting countless kids in danger – and we need you to speak up for them. Send a message to President Biden: children and families must be allowed to seek asylum in the U.S. – it’s their legal and human right. Migrants have a guaranteed international right to request humanitarian protections, yet they’re being apprehended like criminals. This is no way to treat families in need – especially children seeking safety. Public health experts tell us that Title 42 doesn’t stop the spread of COVID-19. Using it to turn children and families seeking safety away at our borders while allowing tourists to enter violates our core American values and puts migrants at great risk.
