Hi John,
Senate Republicans have once again weaponized the filibuster against every Americans' right to have their voice heard at the ballot box.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. SCOTUS struck the heart of the VRA down in 2013, emboldening Republican-controlled legislatures across the country to test the strength of what remains intact.
I don't know what stings the most today. The fact that John marched and was beaten bloody in the streets of Selma for each of those Senate Republicans' freedom to vote, or the half-century's worth of back-sliding my community will experience next.
Legislative protections like H.R.4 are vital to defending our democracy. State legislatures enacted over 400 measures aimed at restricting ballot access in 2021 alone.
The 2020 Census data showed that 95% of the state's growth happened in communities of color. Yet, the Texas Republican-controlled legislature disproportionately targeted minority districts, like mine, while drawing the new maps.
This latest obstructionist move by Senate Republicans is further proof of Republicans' commitment to voter suppression.
We must reform the filibuster.
As your Congressional Voting Rights Caucus Co-Chair, I am committed to protecting the most sacred rights guaranteed under our Constitution. We cannot let an arcane rule stand in between us and the integrity of our elections.
I won't give up on this.
Fighting for you, Marc Veasey, TX-33
Growing up in Fort Worth’s historic Como neighborhood, I used to dream about being able to get opportunities that would allow me a chance to experience things that filled my imagination; about American heroes and fascinating places in our country. I dreamed that I could one day make a difference in the lives of my friends and neighbors. It was that simple goal that eventually led me to Washington and the halls of Congress.
For nearly a decade, I have been humbled by the ongoing support and encouragement of the community that raised me. Today, I’m asking for it again.
I am officially running for re-election to the 33rd District of Texas!
