I had a gut feeling we needed to be worried about Virginia. And even with our last minute Team Harder fundraising efforts for Terry McAuliffe’s campaign, it wasn’t enough. (Thank you again for your help, the McAuliffe team was grateful).

I’ll save you the think piece about how this is a “warning sign” for us next year. The bottom line is: Democrats in Congress (and President Biden for that matter) need to do a better job getting things done and making sure voters know about it. We can’t cede the message to Fox News. If we do, we’re in for a blood-bath next year and Nancy Pelosi hands the Speaker’s gavel to Kevin McCarthy. It’s that simple.

So, where do we go from here? We can either sit in our pity and hope things magically get better, or we can take action. We can pass legislation to improve people’s lives (I have multiple bills ready to go as I type this…). We can do a better job communicating with voters, especially our latino community who for too long have been left out of the conversation. We can organize early, talk about the things that really matter to our families, and not take any moment or opportunity for granted. We need to start working now.

Now our challenge is bigger and more urgent than ever. Dangerous QAnon extremists are only 3 seats away from taking control of the House majority and they’re more empowered than ever after last night’s results. I know what it’s like to beat an extremist - conspiracy theories and lies take hold much easier than we’d like to admit. But I know we can do this - we just have to get to work, fast.
