Dear John,
There’s no sugarcoating it. Last night was a major disappointment… and a wake-up call for Democrats.
But now, believe it or not, a parade of corporate-media pundits are on cable news blaming progressives, saying that Democrats lost in Virginia because the party went too far to the left.
It’s absolute hogwash. And if this is the main lesson that Democrats take from last night’s losses, then next year’s midterms--and the 2024 presidential election--will be even worse.
The only way that Democrats can turn this around is by finally delivering on their campaign promises for everyday working Americans.
We must pass the Build Back Better reconciliation package, including paid family leave and lowering prescription drug costs. We must pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. And at long last, we must end the filibuster and stop letting two corporate Democrats block President Biden’s entire agenda.
And then Democrats must beat back the Republicans’ race-baiting propaganda machine with clear, effective messaging about the real economic challenges everyday Americans are facing.
There’s not a minute to lose. Inequality Media Civic Action is starting right now by mobilizing millions of followers across social media to demand action from Congress and to get our message out to the American people.
Republicans won yesterday with a cynical, race-baiting campaign based on fear-mongering about “critical race theory.”
But this kind of racist scapegoating only works when Democrats don’t deliver a clear message and real results for everyday Americans.
That’s why we’re launching a major effort across every social media and internet platform to grow our audience, mobilize voters, and deliver proven-effective, scientifically tested messages calling out Republican lies and demanding that the Democrats deliver.
We’ve already built one of the largest audiences on the internet of any progressive organization. It’s clearly not enough. We must go bigger, right now, before it’s too late--but it won’t be cheap or easy, so we’re counting on supporters like you to chip in what you can.
Thank you,
Robert Reich |
