Friend,
This week, people across the country came out to vote in important local elections.
While the national media is focused on Democratic losses in Virginia, we’re seeing a number of exciting election wins across the country. Many candidates of color and candidates from other marginalized communities will now get to represent their cities, including Black, Muslim, and Asian American women.
They are the future of the Democratic Party.
I’m particularly proud of electoral wins by many of the local candidates our Rooted in Community PAC supported:
-
Gabriella Santiago-Romero for Detroit City Council, District 6—who participated in our first-ever Rooted in Community Campaign School earlier this year
-
Latisha Johnson for Detroit City Council, District 4—who also participated in our Rooted in Community Campaign School
-
Glenda McDonald for Highland Park City Council, District 1
-
Lisa Hicks-Clayton for Dearborn Heights Treasurer
Having these folks in public office will make a huge difference in people’s lives—especially for communities who’ve been left behind. Which is why we’re going to keep working to train and elect more progressive candidates who represent marginalized communities.
Can you chip in now so we can keep building a truly equitable, multi-racial democracy where everyone can thrive? It’s critical that we show the Democratic Party establishment that when we support candidates from diverse and marginalized backgrounds, we not only win, we also increase representation in local, state, and federal government.

Those of us with multiple marginalized identities belong in public office. Our experiences help us better serve our constituents, many of whom have been ignored or disregarded by our government and law enforcement for too long. And because we often more fully understand the needs of everyday people, we bring a sense of urgency for justice that’s often lacking in politics. We know there’s no time to wait for the changes we need.
Thank you so much for your support and solidarity.
Onward,
Rashida
