Supportive Housing Webinar Series
In partnership with The Alaska Training Cooperative (ATC) and United Way of Anchorage (UWA), the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority (Trust) is sponsoring a five-part webinar series focused on supportive housing. This flyer will be updated with both past and upcoming webinar links.

Please join us to learn how Alaskans and many non-profits nationally are creating the solution for homelessness - supportive housing!

Webinar 1: Introduction to Supportive Housing
Nov 9, 2021, 1 pm – 2:30 pm AKDT
Introduction by series sponsors: UWA and the Trust

This introduction session will provide a general overview and
key elements of supportive housing programs used nationwide and here in Alaska which will be presented by The Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH). CSH is a national non-profit organization that advances solutions that use housing as a platform for services to improve the lives of the most vulnerable people, maximize public resources and build healthy communities.

This will also be an occasion to recognize and celebrate 10 years of operations of the first Housing First programs in the state, Anchorage's RurAL CAP Karluk Manor and Fairbanks' Tanana Chiefs South Cushman Housing First programs.

The Anchorage Coalition to End Homlessness (ACEH) works with allies in the community to design, create, and lead implementation for the Anchorage community plan on homelessness.

Individuals new to homelessness: 227
Total individuals experiencing homelessness: 3,021


** Coordinated Entry & Shelter
------------------------------------------------------------
Family Emergency Shelter
Families that are unsheltered are encouraged to call 2-1-1. From there they will be given a referral to either Safe Harbor, McKinnel House or Clare House depending on current vacancies. If no vacancies are available the family will get a referral to the Aviator or Aspen Hotel. This is a temporary solution to help families in need. Additional shelter beds will be available in the coming weeks.

This release includes a full report, "Adverse Childhood Experiences, Intimate Partner Violence, and Sexual Violence Among Alaska Mental Health Trust Beneficiaries: Findings from the Alaska Victimization Survey," a Fact Sheet, "Alaska Mental Health Trust Beneficiaries had more Adverse Childhood Experiences," and a second Fact Sheet, "Alaska Mental Health Trust beneficiaries were more likely to experience Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence."

Mayor Bronson Accepts Resignation of Dr. John Morris

Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson released the following statement upon accepting the resignation of Dr. John Morris.

“I want to thank Dr. John Morris for his service and commitment to the Municipality of Anchorage. The focus and mission remains the same in helping our city’s most vulnerable get the compassionate care and resources they need. That includes working with the Anchorage Assembly with the strategy that involves housing, transitional housing, supportive housing, treatment, and navigation centers.”

Improving Homelessness Nationwide with Build Back Better Investments
President Biden unveiled the Build Back Better framework. Its proposed $150 billion to expand the Housing Choice Voucher program, boost the Housing Trust Fund, and improve public housing could have a historic impact on the homeless services field and substantially reduce poverty.

White House Releases “Build Back Better Act” Framework with Historic Investments in Affordable Housing
President Joe Biden released on October 28 a framework ([link removed]) for the “Build Back Better Act ([link removed]) ,” moving Congress one step closer to enacting the legislation. The $1.75 trillion economic recovery package – negotiated down from $3.5 trillion – includes $150 billion for affordable housing. The framework includes significant investments in the HoUSed campaign’s top priorities ([link removed]) :
* $25 billion to expand housing vouchers to hundreds of thousands of households
* $65 billion to preserve the nation’s deteriorating public housing infrastructure
* $15 billion for the national Housing Trust Fund (HTF) to build and preserve over 150,000 affordable, accessible homes for households with the lowest incomes

Whole-Person Care for People Experiencing Homelessness and Opioid Use Disorder Toolkit – Part I
This new resource outlines a whole-person care approach to supporting and assisting people experiencing homelessness and OUD in their recovery journey. The toolkit provides an overview of homelessness and OUD and highlights person-centered and trauma-informed care, reducing stigma, recovery supports, and harm reduction.

** U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH)

USICH Votes on Federal Strategic Plan and Veteran Homelessness at October Meeting
The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) held its quarterly meeting on Wednesday to discuss the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness as well as joint strategies to end Veteran homelessness.

The council unanimously voted to set a bold national vision for the next federal strategic plan, with a milestone(s) that’s measurable and achievable by the end of 2024. It also approved strategies to operationalize the joint statement to end Veteran homelessness ([link removed]) from the departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA).

The meeting was led by Council Chair Marcia Fudge, the HUD secretary, and Council Vice Chair Denis McDonough, the VA secretary. It was attended by representatives of 19 federal agencies as well as Gene Sperling, a senior adviser to President Biden and the White House American Rescue Plan coordinator.
