Red Wave Hits Connecticut in 2021 Municipal Election

More than twenty Connecticut towns and cities flipped from Democrat to Republican yesterday behind a groundswell of Republican energy. Candidates’ hard work and compelling messages were responsible for the higher-than-expected turnout compared to recent municipal election years.

Following two years of unprecedented economic hardship and government overreach, the recent increasing crime and corruption were the final straws for the majority of the electorate. Republicans and common-sense Democrat and Independent voters have simply had enough of Connecticut Democrats and their mismanagement. Victories stretched from state border to state border, in big cities and small towns alike, and Republicans saw candidates perform the best they have in years.

"The election bodes well for a strong 2022 for Republicans," Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto said. "Last night's election speaks to the overwhelming buyer's remorse that is being felt nationally and right here in Connecticut. Fiscally and socially, Democrats are jamming their failing policies down people's throats and Connecticut is waking up and pushing back. Democrats are shutting parents out of the decision-making process with their children’s health and education. Democrats are trying to levy a new gas tax on top of skyrocketing prices at the pump. Worst yet, Democrats are denying any increase to crime in Connecticut even though their own members are responsible for watering down the state criminal justice system and handcuffing law enforcement. In power for too long, the Connecticut Democrats have lost sight of who they are accountable to, and the voters gave them a harsh reminder last night”

“Connecticut Republicans are the party of Main Street. The 2021 election results showcased more than 20 additional municipalities choosing Republican leadership. The successes of this year’s campaign are setting us up for a similar outcome in 2022. Congratulations to all Republican candidates. To those who won - best of luck in your new or renewed capacities. To those who were not ultimately the winners, thank you for your hard work. You are an integral part of the party’s forward momentum,” said Proto.

There were an overwhelming number of Republican pickups and close calls, even in the wake of concerns over expanded absentee balloting and a flagrant violation of the “wet signature” rules on absentee ballot applications.

“Further testament to our successes yesterday was overcoming a deluge of mass printed, pre-filled absentee ballot applications. Imagine how many more towns or local offices would be Republican if the Democrats adhered to the letter and spirit of the absentee balloting rules! Let’s keep up the good work, Connecticut Republicans!” concluded Proto.
