John,
The IRC has recently identified the five most challenging countries for girls to grow up — based on the experiences of girls around the world and the expertise of our staff working directly with them.
I hope you'll take a minute to read about the unique challenges girls face and read their stories in their own words: [link removed]
Girls are disproportionately impacted by shocks like armed conflict, drought and flooding. Too often, they have limited or no access to school or health care — and they are especially vulnerable to sexual violence, abuse and exploitaition.
In Afghanistan, women and children are increasingly bearing the brunt of upheaval and violence. In July, a 15-year-old girl shared with our team, "I get scared when I think about what will happen to my future, my goals and my dreams for my future."
In Yemen, the rate of forced and early marriage of girls has more than doubled since the conflict started in 2014, with as many as two thirds of Yemeni girls married before they reach adulthood.
John, your support has been critical in helping the IRC protect and empower girls living in some of the toughest places on Earth. Thank you.
As you know, the IRC is committed to ensuring gender equality is a cornerstone of all of our programs. And with you by our side, our teams on the ground are directly meeting the challenges that girls face — including through health services, psychosocial support for survivors of sexual violence and safe healing and learning spaces.
Thanks again for standing with the IRC and with women and girls today and every day.
— Andrea, IRC
